The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Sees Major Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
