UK Extends Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Alert Roster with 11 Countries
The UK Foreign Office has included eleven new nations to its public advisory roster about the threats of methanol toxicity from contaminated beverages.
The expanded travel guidance covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the frequency of documented incidents" of toxic alcohol toxicity.
Only a few weeks ago, authorities had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, after multiple high-profile events like the fatal demise of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being warned that even small amounts of methanol can lead to blindness or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hrs.
Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Used?
Industrial alcohol is a poisonous industrial alcohol commonly used in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. This substance is not intended for drinking.
Although it is naturally produced during the creation of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers bring it down to low, safe levels for human consumption through the distillation process.
However in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into spirits to cut costs, and because it is flavorless and scentless, it is very difficult to detect.

Authorities minister the minister said that each tourist should know the symptoms of toxic alcohol toxicity.
